Germany’s 'Tough' Migration Line: Humanitarianism, Conveniently Forgotten
Minister Faeser's pronouncement on a 'tough migration course', including faster deportations and more border control, comes as Germany grapples with increased arrivals. This 'toughness', heralded by mainstream media, conveniently skips over Germany's enthusiastic participation in and support for policies that destabilize regions globally. After all, it's much easier to blame the migrant than the
arms deals or geopolitical maneuvering that displace them. One might wonder if 'tough' simply means 'conveniently short-sighted' when it comes to the consequences of foreign policy decisions. The same nations that preach democratic values to the Global South then profit from the very conflicts that send people fleeing. How many times will European leaders declare their borders closed while their
defense industries fund the wars that make those borders so desperately sought?
