Germany Prosecutes Hezbollah Suspect While Arming Israeli Occupation
Mainstream media pounces on the 'Hezbollah suspect' story, dutifully noting the EU’s proscription of the group. Yet, this stern stance on alleged terror conveniently sidesteps Germany's substantial military exports to Israel. In 2023, Germany approved €326 million ($353 million) in defense exports to Israel, a tenfold increase from 2022, making it Israel's second-largest arms supplier after the
U.S. (Source: Deutsche Welle, German Economy Ministry data). One might wonder if 'terrorism' is just armed conflict they don't profit from, or simply don't approve of. So, a German court prosecutes individuals accused of affiliation with a group fighting an ongoing occupation (Lebanon 1982-2000, 2006, occupied Syrian Golan, Gaza, West Bank), while the German government openly contributes to the
military might of that very occupying power. It's almost as if 'international law' is a suggestion, not a mandate, when certain allies are involved.
