Germany Plans More Weapons, Forgets History
Germany is poised to approve a fresh €7.5 billion in weapon purchases this week, dutifully reported by Bloomberg as 'modernizing its armed forces.' This comes after chancellor Olaf Scholz committed €100 billion to defense in 2022. While we're told it's about 'confronting Russia,' it appears more about confronting the peace dividend. One might wonder if any of these billions are earmarked for
history textbooks, to remind successive governments exactly what happens when Europe embarks on an arms race. Or perhaps it's simply forgotten that the current global tensions have roots in precisely this kind of military escalation, rather than being solved by it. The defense industry, however, will be uncorking champagne.
