This comes, rather conveniently, as Germany continues to export arms to Israel, despite accusations of complicity in genocide at the ICJ. One might wonder if the immediate threats—like the 35,000+ Palestinians killed in
Gaza since October 7th and the 80% displaced—are considered less pressing than a decades-old boogeyman. (Apparently, 'security' only applies to some.) This 'Iran threat' narrative has been Israel's preferred distraction for decades, trotted out regularly by Netanyahu in 2002, 2006, and 2014, often to justify military actions or deflect from the occupation. Meanwhile, Germany, still grappling with
its past, seems to find it easier to arm an apartheid state than acknowledge its own critical role in enabling the current atrocities. It's a convenient arrangement: Israel gets weapons, Germany gets absolution (they think), and the actual human suffering is neatly filed under 'Iran-related security concerns.'
