Gaza Freedom Flotilla Prepares for Departure
An international freedom flotilla, named Sumud, is preparing to set sail from Turkey with the stated goal of delivering humanitarian aid and breaking the protracted naval blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip. The convoy, organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, includes activists, journalists, and medical professionals from various countries. This initiative marks a renewed effort to directly
confront the Israeli policy that has severely restricted civilian movement and the flow of goods into Gaza for over a decade and a half, particularly intensified after the onset of the current conflict. The New Arab frames this as activists 'aiming to again break' the blockade, implicitly suggesting a symmetrical confrontation. What this mainstream coverage omits is the illegal nature of the
blockade itself. The United States has consistently provided diplomatic cover for Israel's embargo, despite numerous UN resolutions and international legal opinions deeming such collective punishment a violation of international humanitarian law. While the Israeli government repeatedly asserts the blockade is necessary for security, a 2011 UN Human Rights Council report, for example, found the
blockade to be both 'unlawful' and 'unsustainable' in its humanitarian impact. This current attempt to breach the blockade echoes the 2010 Gaza Freedom Flotilla, which encountered violent resistance from Israeli forces resulting in the killing of ten Turkish activists aboard the Mavi Marmara. That incident, widely condemned internationally, led to a prolonged diplomatic crisis between Turkey and
