Gaza Finds 'Optimism' in Ceasefire Ritual, Again
Al Jazeera highlights Palestinians in Gaza voicing 'hopes and fears' for a new ceasefire. This 'optimism' is about as fresh as Netanyahu's commitment to a two-state solution, a concept he’s deftly sidestepped since—well, forever. Historically, such 'ceasefires' often serve as a pause for Israel to rearm and re-strategize, not a prelude to genuine peace. The cycle is grimly predictable:
destruction, 'negotiation,' an internationally 'brokered' truce, then the next brutal chapter. Remember the 2008-09 Gaza War, 2012, 2014’s 'Operation Protective Edge,' and 2021? Each ended with 'ceasefires' and similar sentiments of 'cautious optimism' from a population desperate for reprieve. Yet, the siege continued, settlements expanded, and the root causes—occupation, blockade, and
displacement—were never addressed. This isn't peace; it's a breather between rounds of a fight only one side is equipped to win. How many times must Gaza 'optimistically' await the next shoe to drop?
