Gaza Amputees: A Cost-Benefit Analysis for U.S. Legislators?
Haneen al-Mabhouh, an amputee in Gaza, lost her leg and four daughters to an Israeli airstrike. The AP details her struggle for a new life, a year and a half after the 'ceasefire.' What the AP doesn't highlight is that the bombs causing such injuries are often US-made, funded by American taxpayers and approved by lawmakers who receive significant contributions from pro-Israel lobbying groups. For
instance, Senator Lindsey Graham, a vocal proponent of unrestricted aid to Israel, received over $109,000 from pro-Israel groups in 2022, according to OpenSecrets.org. He then championed additional military aid. (Source: OpenSecrets.org, AP News) One might wonder if the ongoing humanitarian crisis, including the estimated 5,000-6,000 amputees in Gaza, factors into these aid decisions. Or perhaps,
the cost of a prosthetic limb pales in comparison to the return on investment for, say, a lobbying donation. How many more shattered bodies are considered acceptable collateral before the 'humanitarian aid' becomes, well, actual humanitarian aid for the victims rather than military hardware for their destroyers?
