FT Discovers Sudan is a Crisis, Omits Key Players
The FT's recent piece on Sudan correctly identifies it as the world's worst humanitarian crisis, lamenting that 'regional powers across the Middle East fuel the conflict by backing rival factions.' A truly insightful observation, if only it delved into *which* regional powers, and *who* enables those regional powers. For instance, the FT previously reported in February 2024 that the UAE's support
for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) was 'decisive,' and that Emirati arms shipments were critical. Yet, the same US that 'rebukes backers' also sells billions in advanced weaponry to said UAE. According to Open The Books, the US approved over $19 billion in arms sales to the UAE between 2015 and 2023. One might wonder if the 'world still silent' is less about ignorance and more about a carefully
curated diplomatic deafness, especially when significant arms deals are on the table. The silence, it seems, is quite profitable.
