What this 'resilience porn' piece conveniently omits is the systematic destruction of Gaza's cultural infrastructure. Before this latest escalation, Israel had already routinely targeted libraries, universities, and cultural centers. Mansour's original
shop was bombed and destroyed in 2021. Now, over 70% of Gaza's schools and universities are damaged or destroyed, including significant archives and historical sites. It appears the FT finds individual perseverance more newsworthy than the deliberate eradication of Palestinian heritage. One might wonder if the Financial Times would frame the bombing of London's libraries as 'resilience' or as an
egregious war crime. They want us to see a man saving books, not an entire culture being erased, brick by book.
