While France24 (and other Western outlets) breathlessly detail every alleged atrocity in Tehran, the historical amnesia is rather profound. One might recall similar, well-documented atrocities—often committed by U.S.-backed regimes or during U.S.-led invasions—that garnered significantly less airtime or were quickly framed as 'collateral damage.' The U.S. itself has a storied history of supporting
violent regime change operations in Iran, dating back to the 1953 coup that overthrew democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. This selective indignation plays directly into a long-established playbook: demonize an adversary to justify intervention or continued aggression. Meanwhile, the sheer number of documented civilian deaths in ongoing conflicts where Western-supplied weapons
are involved, and where protests against those actions are met with state violence, rarely receive the same urgent, condemning headlines. It appears some lives, and some state-sanctioned killings, are simply more televisable than others.
