One might wonder if the US would prefer a 'foothold' like the 1973 Chilean coup, or the 1954 Guatemalan coup—both orchestrated by Washington. When the US backs a government, it's
called 'democracy promotion,' but when a country outside the approved roster does, it's a 'threat to stability.' This selective alarmism ignores the US's long record of destabilizing Latin American democracies, including through economic sanctions and paramilitary support. Iran offering economic assistance and diplomatic solidarity to a nation under US sanctions is painted as a sinister plot,
