Food Banks Scramble While Congress Funds Foreign Wars
As The Hill reports, states are 'scrambling' to maintain food access, fearing a potential SNAP lapse that could leave millions hungry. This comes as Congress just approved H.R. 815, a foreign aid package that, among other things, allocates $14 billion in military assistance to Israel. Just last year, AIPAC spent over $23 million on lobbying and contributions , with many of those funds distributed
to key lawmakers who then voted 'yes' on such aid. It appears our representatives can always find billions for tanks and fighter jets (which cost roughly $80-100 million each, by the way), but struggle to secure consistent funding for the basic nutrition of their own constituents. Perhaps if SNAP was rebranded as 'Strategic Nutritional Assistance Program for Allied Defense,' it would receive more
fervent bipartisan support. How many food-insecure families do we fund for every cluster bomb sent abroad?
