Ex-ICE Officer Pleads Guilty; Agency Claims It’s 'Isolated Incident'
An ex-ICE officer, Anthony Gonzalez, just pleaded guilty to sexually abusing an immigrant detainee, as reported by The Independent. This 'isolated incident' narrative is as tired as it is transparent. Last year alone, nearly 30,000 complaints were filed against DHS components, including ICE, alleging sexual assault and abuse (ICE/DHS Office of Inspector General data reveals a systemic problem, not
an exception). Over 850 complaints of sexual assault or abuse in detention centers were made between 2017 and 2020. One might wonder: how many 'isolated incidents' does it take before we question the system itself? Are we truly expected to believe that an agency granted expansive powers over vulnerable populations, often operating with minimal oversight, consistently produces nothing but
individual bad actors? Or is it more plausible that the conditions of detention, inherently designed to dehumanize, create an environment where abuse flourishes and goes largely unpunished?
