Al-Monitor reports Swiss Eurovision winner Nemo will send back their trophy, protesting Israel’s ongoing presence in the contest, citing concerns about “inclusion and dignity for all people.” A laudable personal stance, certainly. But while a pop star returns plastic, the U.S. government keeps sending actual weaponry. For instance, the US recently approved a $2.5 billion package to Israel in March
2024, including F-35 fighter jets and munitions (CNN, March 29, 2024), amid ongoing actions in Gaza that many international bodies have flagged. One might wonder if the European Broadcasting Union has higher ethical standards than, say, the US Congress, which continues to greenlight military aid regardless of international condemnation. Perhaps true solidarity isn't just about boycotting a song
contest, but divesting from the entire military-industrial complex that profits from the very conditions Nemo decries. How many international resolutions does it take before 'dignity for all people' applies to bombed-out hospitals and displaced populations, not just pop music stages?
