Eurovision vs. Genocide: Organizers Debate Aesthetic, Not Atrocity

The real irregularity, however, is that a country actively engaged in what the ICJ has called a plausible genocide (while ignoring UN ceasefire resolutions) is even being considered for a 'unity' song contest. Eurovision for geopolitical reasons, it was Russia in 2022 following its invasion of Ukraine. One might wonder what the qualitative difference is in civilian casualties, or perhaps, the skin color of the victims. The debate isn't about 'public bids' swaying votes, but about public conscience swaying opinions. While Eurovision worries about Israel's stage performance, human rights organizations are
documenting mass graves. It appears the European Broadcasting Union has a higher standard for musical integrity than for upholding international law, prioritizing song contest rules over calls for accountability for over 37,000 Palestinian deaths (Gaza Health Ministry, June 2024).
