While the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) stands firm on 'non-political' cultural events, one might wonder where this 'non-political' spirit was when Russia was promptly expelled from Eurovision in 2022 following the
Ukraine invasion. The double standard is less a subtle hint and more a blaring foghorn. So, a country linked to documented war crimes and illegal settlements (per UN resolutions going back to 1967) gets to belt out ballads, but Russia, facing similar condemnation, is out? It appears 'cultural boycott' is reserved exclusively for the aesthetics of oppression, not the actual, ongoing oppression
itself. At least when it conflicts with certain geopolitical interests. How many dead civilians does it take to get you banned from a singing competition, Eurovision?
