This isn't new; similar protests erupted during the 2019 contest, hosted in Tel Aviv, with groups like Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) leading sustained pressure against what they termed 'artwashing' of occupation. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), however, insists Israel's
participation is 'non-political.' One might wonder how bombing hospitals and leveling entire Gaza neighborhoods is considered a 'non-political' cultural contribution. The EBU's steadfast neutrality rings hollow when compared to their swift ban on Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. It appears 'non-political' means 'politically inconvenient to condemn.' While artists face backlash for simply
wanting to sing, children in Gaza face bombs. The disparity in accountability, dressed up as artistic freedom, truly hits a cynical note.
