Europeans Lament Trump's 'Threats' While Backing Israel's Annexation
Funny, isn't it, how sovereign rights become paramount when a US president eyes an Arctic rock, but evaporate when Israel's government systematically annexes Palestinian land? While Europe valiantly defends Greenland's autonomy from a crass American real estate bid, they simultaneously back Netanyahu's government which has declared its intent to annex parts of the West Bank – a move widely
condemned as illegal under international law. There's no flurry of 'Greenland belongs to its people' proclamations for Gaza or the West Bank, just diplomatic hand-wringing and continued arms shipments. It appears the principle of self-determination is a luxury reserved for nations whose land isn't coveted by a key Western ally. The selective indignation is, shall we say, geographically
inconsistent. One might wonder if the outcry would be as robust if Trump's focus were not an ice sheet, but rather, say, a Palestinian olive grove. How many 'friends' must a people have before their land actually 'belongs' to them?
