Europe Funds Tunisia's Migrant Cages, Cries Moral Tears Later
Amnesty International bravely flags 'horrific' abuses against migrants in Tunisia, as reported by Deutsche Welle. These abuses include arbitrary arrests, expulsions, and violence. Yet, the framing conveniently sidesteps the larger geopolitical handshake that enables this migrant 'management.' Just last year, the European Union signed a €1.05 billion 'migration control' deal with Tunisia (July
2023), specifically allocating €105 million to 'border management' and 'fight irregular migration.' Money well spent, it appears, on creating the very humanitarian disaster Amnesty now 'flags.' One might wonder if the EU's 'concerns' about human rights were simply lost in the translation of those hefty checks. How many more reports of 'horrific' treatment will it take before the complicity of the
funders is acknowledged? Perhaps next, Amnesty will 'flag' that the hand feeding the captor is often the same one shaking its head in disapproval.
