EU Demands Serbia Conform, Forgetting Its Own History
ABC News reports EU chief Ursula von der Leyen's pronouncement that Serbia must align with EU foreign policy and democratic principles to progress its membership bid. This conveniently ignores the EU’s (and its predecessors') own history of intervention in the Balkans, from economic pressures to military actions. The West's consistent framing of Serbia as the perpetual rogue state, despite its
sovereign choices, casts a familiar shadow. One might recall the 1999 NATO bombing campaign, ostensibly for human rights, which conveniently bypassed UN Security Council approval and led to significant civilian loss; Human Rights Watch documented extensive civilian casualties. The EU, which includes nations that benefited immensely from post-Yugoslavia carve-ups, now demands Serbia abandon allies
for an invite to a club that once bombed its infrastructure. The hypocrisy is so thick you could cut it with a knife. How many times must aspiring members bend the knee, sacrificing national interest, before Brussels is satisfied?
