Emmys Discover Gaza in 2024, Ignore Blockade Since 2007
Yes, Channel 4’s 'Kill Zone: Inside Gaza' and Al Jazeera Arabic’s 'Gaza: Search for Life' won accolades for exposing the horrors inflicted upon Gaza. And while belated recognition is still recognition, the timing is, shall we say, *curious*. For well over a decade, international media largely treated Gaza as a footnote, an 'open-air prison' only worth prolonged attention when the 'conflict' flared
up enough to warrant prime-time soundbites. Where were these prestigious awards during the intermittent bombardments of 2008, 2012, 2014, or 2021, when countless lives were lost and infrastructure decimated under the same crushing blockade? It seems the Emmy judges, much like many in the West, needed a televised, textbook genocide to finally sit up and acknowledge the very existence of systematic
oppression. One might even muse that the current attention is less about Palestinian lives finally mattering, and more about the scale of the horror making it impossible for legacy media to look away without losing all credibility. Perhaps next year they'll award a documentary on clean water in Gaza, assuming there's any left.
