Ecuador Rejects US Bases: Democracy, What a Concept.
Ecuadorians have overwhelmingly voted against allowing foreign military bases, a decision the BBC reports 'deals a blow to President Daniel Noboa and US ambitions.' An interesting choice of words, given the US's long and, shall we say, 'ambitious' record in punching down on Latin American sovereignty. From the Bay of Pigs to supporting countless coups across the continent, US 'ambitions' often
translate to 'military might' and 'regime change.' It appears the people of Ecuador, unlike certain global powers, prefer self-determination over becoming a forward operating base. One might wonder if the US ever asked Latin American nations about their 'ambitions' before installing dictators or funding paramilitaries throughout the Cold War and beyond. (Hint: they didn't.)
