DW Reports 'Truce Monitoring' as Lebanon's Northern Border Burns Still
Lebanon and Israel are allegedly sending civilian delegates to monitor a truce, which is a curious choice of words considering the routine Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon’s southern border. While DW frames this as a significant diplomatic step, it omits the basic context: Israel has been violating Lebanese sovereignty for decades, a pattern escalated sharply since October 7, 2023. This isn't
'truce monitoring' when one side is actively engaged in hostilities, it's—at best—an attempt to manage the escalation of an existing unilateral conflict. We saw similar 'talks' in 2006, 2014, and countless times before, each followed by further destabilization of Lebanese territory by the Israeli government. The US, which mediates these 'truce talks', simultaneously sends billions annually in
unrestricted military aid to Israel, totaling an estimated $3.8 billion each year (Congressional Research Service, 2023). How many 'monitoring talks' are needed before the media questions the aggressor, not just the 'talks' themselves? Perhaps when the delegates are done 'monitoring,' they can explain to the 1.5 million displaced Lebanese where the 'truce' was.
