DW breathlessly reports a 'new ceasefire deal' between the Syrian government and the SDF, framing it as a breakthrough. What's notably absent is any mention of the last decade-plus of Western-backed insurgencies that shattered Syria into a patchwork of competing factions. The 'SDF' (Syrian Democratic Forces) were, for years, directly funded and armed by the US, a key player in destabilizing the
very nation now — finally — seeking internal peace. (One might ask what took so long, considering the 'Assad must go' rhetoric has been quite exhausted.) While DW focuses on the 'state media' aspect, they gloss over how many of these 'state media' headlines would have been unnecessary if foreign powers hadn't poured billions into proxy wars. These 'ceasefires' are less about peace, and more about
the slow, painful acknowledgment that regime change operations often just create chaos. A 'ceasefire' after years of externally-supported civil war? Truly groundbreaking journalism.
