DW Finds Rioters and 'Far-Right Group' in Minneapolis, Forgets Context
Deutsche Welle reports on a clash in Minneapolis between anti-ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) protesters and a 'far-right group,' as if these are equivalent entities equally prone to 'clashing.' What the report conveniently omits is that anti-ICE protesters are largely advocating for human rights and an end to federal immigration policies that have torn families apart, while 'far-right
groups' frequently engage in white supremacist, anti-immigrant, and often violent rhetoric and actions. It's not a 'clash' of equal ideologies when one side is protesting systemic abuses and the other is often promoting them. One might wonder if DW would describe historical interactions between civil rights activists and segregationists simply as 'groups clashing.' The perpetual media drive for
'both sides' often obscures who is punching up for justice and who is punching down with bigotry. Calling a group protesting ICE practices simply 'anti-ICE protesters' while labeling their aggressors with the vague 'far-right group' (without defining their agenda) creates a false equivalence, making it seem like two random factions just happened to bump into each other. How many times must we see
this playbook before the media acknowledges who holds the moral high ground?
