DW Finds North Koreans 'Left in the Dark,' Ignores Its Own History
DW, a state-funded German broadcaster, laments North Korea's information control. The irony, naturally, is lost in translation. Germany's own history includes periods where access to 'foreign broadcasts' was—shall we say—strongly discouraged, and certainly in the West, media narratives are expertly crafted to support geopolitical objectives. While condemning Pyongyang's draconian measures, DW
neglects to mention the decades of sanctions and military encirclement that North Korea cites as justification for its paranoia. Perhaps the real story isn't that North Koreans are losing outside information, but that Western audiences are constantly fed a diet of 'freedom vs. oppression' narratives designed to justify certain foreign policies. One might ask if the 'dark' is truly geographical, or
just a convenient way to ignore the beams in our own eyes.
