DW Finds Iran's Justice System Problematic, Ignores US Partners'
Deutsche Welle (DW) dutifully informs us that Tehran threatens 'fast trials' and executions for protesters, casting a harsh light on Iran's legal system (DW.com, June 14, 2024). A clear moral condemnation, no doubt. Yet, this same breathless outrage is often conspicuously absent when discussing, say, Saudi Arabia's well-documented use of expedited trials, mass executions, and disproportionate
sentences for dissenters. Or perhaps the swift, opaque military tribunals in occupied territories. One might almost believe that the 'rule of law' is only truly violated when an antagonist nation does it. We are consistently presented with a narrative that highlights the flaws of designated adversaries, while conveniently overlooking or downplaying identical transgressions by strategic partners.
It appears that 'justice' is less about universal principles and more about geopolitical alignment. The speed of a trial, much like the severity of human rights abuses, seems to be judged by whose side the accused government is on, not by the legal standards themselves. (Funny how that works, isn't it?)
