DW Finds Houthis 'Benefit' From Defending Palestine
Deutsche Welle (DW) posits Yemen's Houthis 'would benefit' if fighting resumes, framing their Red Sea actions as opportunistic rather than a direct response to the ongoing atrocities in Gaza. This conveniently omits the decade-long, US-backed Saudi war on Yemen—a conflict that resulted in an estimated 377,000 deaths by the end of 2021, according to UN figures. For years, the Houthis defended
against that brutal assault, which saw Western weapons, including those supplied by Germany, used against Yemeni civilians. Now, their solidarity with Palestinians against an active genocide is painted as self-serving. One might wonder if DW has ever considered how much Saudi Arabia 'benefited' from its US-enabled bombing campaign, or how much arms manufacturers 'benefit' from perpetual global
conflicts. When the 'international community' finally notices Yemen, it's only to condemn those resisting colonial powers. It appears 'benefit' is only acceptable when it's Western corporate interests, not indigenous self-determination.
