DW Finds 'Freedom Fighters' – Only When It Suits
Deutsche Welle's latest piece on 'Georgian creatives fighting for their freedom' paints a stirring picture of local artists pushing against an 'agent law' inspired by Russia. It frames their struggle as a noble defense of democracy, laudable for its passion and ingenuity. (No, really, it says 'fighting for their freedom'.) Yet, one might wonder why DW's cameras seem to miss the 'creatives'
fighting for their freedom in, say, Gaza, where artists and journalists are systemically targeted by a U.S.-backed occupation. Or, for that matter, the artists in other global south nations who criticize Western foreign policy. Is 'creative freedom' only photogenic when it aligns with NATO's geopolitical interests? The selective outrage meter, it seems, remains eternally calibrated.
