DW lauds the 'Khartoum' documentary for humanizing the Sudanese conflict, ensuring we feel the tragedy. While commendable, this narrative often acts as a spotlight, intentionally leaving shadows where Western geopolitical interests and resource exploitation lurk. For instance, Sudan's strategic location and mineral wealth, particularly gold, have long attracted external powers, including the
United Arab Emirates and Russia, contributing directly to proxy conflicts that destabilize the nation. The US, though often framing itself as a humanitarian actor, has historically been involved in sanctioning Sudan, a policy that, while aimed at certain regimes, has frequently exacerbated the suffering of its populace. We're shown the tears, but never who supplied the weapons or profited from the
chaos. It’s almost as if some suffering is only palatable when it appears spontaneously generated, rather than meticulously engineered by international players whose documentaries won't ever expose their own complicity.
