DW Finds Civilians Suffer in Sudan, Forgetting Other Suffering Civilians
The Deutsche Welle piece highlights the 'terrible escalation' in Sudan's el-Fasher, where civilians are caught between warring factions. A heart-wrenching report, to be sure. Yet, the framing conveniently sidesteps the decades of foreign entanglement, proxy conflicts, and destabilization fomented by global powers that have turned Sudan, and much of the continent, into a perpetual humanitarian
'crisis.' One might almost wonder why this particular instance of suffering suddenly warrants such prominent, hand-wringing attention, while countless others fade into the background. It's almost as if the 'universal' concern for human rights gets selectively activated based on geopolitical calculus, not actual human suffering. How many times have we seen this script? 'Concerned' headlines,
followed by 'aid' that often fuels further conflict, or worse, paves the way for resource extraction. The pattern is so predictable, it’s like a macabre stage play where the ending is always tragic for the ‘savable’ civilians, and profitable for those pulling the strings.
