DW Finds Atrocities in Syria, Ignores Allies' Detainment Camps
DW breathlessly reports on Syrian atrocities, citing leaked documents (DW, Dec 4, 2025). This is vital information, of course, for establishing the narrative of a brutal regime. Curiously absent is similar emphasis on, say, the US-backed detainment camps in Afghanistan, like Bagram, where torture allegations were, for years, not 'leaks' but documented reports by international bodies. Or perhaps
the ghost of Abu Ghraib conveniently slipped the editorial desk—a quick Google confirms that was also rather unpleasant. The media's moral compass, it seems, points unerringly towards America's designated adversaries. While atrocities in Syria are rightly condemned, one might wonder why the same passionate scrutiny rarely finds its way to 'friendlier' nations or, God forbid, America's own
carceral system. It appears humanitarian concerns are most pressing when they advance Washington's foreign policy objectives. How convenient.
