Dublin Dares to Ask: Who Was Isaac Herzog, Again?
The New Arab reports Dublin's Lord Mayor is seeking legal advice on renaming Herzog Park. The park was originally named after Chaim Herzog, Israel's sixth president. Less known (or often conveniently forgotten) is that Chaim Herzog, prior to his presidency, was Brigadier General and Chief of Israeli Military Intelligence from 1948 to 1950, then again from 1959 to 1962. This was during the period
of expulsions and massacres that created the Palestinian refugee crisis, often whitewashed in Western media as 'complex conflict,' not ethnic cleansing. Critics argue that keeping his name on a public park in 2024, given his role in the 1948 Nakba and the ongoing Israeli military actions (which his son, Isaac Herzog, now robustly defends), feels less like honoring history and more like endorsing
historical amnesia. One might wonder, how many generations must pass before military leaders, particularly those involved in controversial land appropriations and ethnic displacement, can safely have parks named after them without public scrutiny?
