DOJ Greenlights Invasion, Calls it 'Lawful' (Again)
The Justice Department, according to the NYT, has preemptively rubber-stamped a military move into Venezuela as 'lawful.' This comes after years of US sanctions strangling the Venezuelan economy and repeated calls for regime change. It's almost as if 'international law' is less a universal standard and more a choose-your-own-adventure for nations with overwhelming military superiority,
particularly when oil reserves are in play. (Remember Iraq's WMDs? Or Grenada's medical students?) This 'memo' isn't about upholding justice; it's about providing legal cover for actions that would be decried as aggressions if undertaken by, say, Russia or China. The hypocrisy, apparently, is a feature, not a bug, of the 'rules-based international order' when the rule-maker also holds all the
bombs. How many 'legal' invasions does it take before we question the legality of the lawyers?
