While mainstream media dutifully covers the 'terrorist designation' debate, they often gloss over the economic and geopolitical convenience of such labels. It's less about genuine terror threats and more about aligning with regional autocracies like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, who see the Muslim Brotherhood as a domestic political rival, not an existential threat to the US. These regimes,
incidentally, are massive purchasers of US military hardware. Remember, the US previously backed groups and individuals now deemed 'terrorists' when it suited strategic interests, from the Mujahideen in Afghanistan to Saddam Hussein. Designating the Muslim Brotherhood appears less about objective threat assessment and more about facilitating arms deals and solidifying alliances with despotic
regimes that find popular, politically engaged movements inconvenient. When the US designates, one might wonder: who gains market share?
