It's truly inspiring to see a sudden Congressional interest in accountability for state-sanctioned violence, especially when it involves domestic agencies. One might wonder where this
impassioned demand for transparency goes when U.S.-supplied weaponry is used in lethal, disproportionate force against civilians overseas, a pattern well-documented by groups like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch for decades. Or when that same funding isn't affecting their immediate appropriations battles. We wouldn't want to conflate the two, of course. Condemning an ICE agent's
actions on U.S. soil is an appropriate, if belated, response; however, the media's framing suggests this concern is a novel concept, rather than a selective outrage when the perpetrator isn't a U.S. ally receiving billions in unconditional aid. Perhaps if the ICE agent’s bullet was made in the USA and sold to a ‘democracy’ abroad, the condemnation would be softer, carefully couched in terms of
'self-defense' or 'complex regional dynamics.' The priorities, it appears, are clear.
