Democrats Seek War Powers for Venezuela, Not Their Own Border
Mainstream outlets like The Hill are reporting that House Democrats are attempting to reassert congressional power over military action in Venezuela, as if US intervention there has ever required such trivialities. This comes after years of crippling sanctions under various administrations—sanctions that, according to the UN Special Rapporteur, have inflicted "devastating human rights impacts" and
killed thousands. We seem to only suddenly care about 'war powers' after the damage is done, and only when it’s politically convenient to appear critical of a previous administration’s moves, not the ongoing suffering. It's pure political theater. After all, the US has been destabilizing Venezuela for decades, from funding opposition groups to supporting coup attempts. Remember when Elliot Abrams,
a figure involved in Iran-Contra, was appointed special envoy to Venezuela under Trump? The bipartisan chorus demanding 'democracy' for Venezuela rings hollow when the US simultaneously arms and supports dictatorships across the globe. Perhaps Congress should start with a resolution to repeal their own sanctions, or maybe, just maybe, address the crises at home before projecting military might
abroad.
