While The Hill reports Democrats like Patty Murray and Marcy Kaptur demand 'full details' on potential Energy Department layoffs affecting a paltry 500-800 federal contractors, the collective congressional outrage over the $95 billion foreign aid package, much of it military assistance, was curiously muted. These same figures typically vote in lockstep for packages like HR 815, which in 2024
allocated millions to foreign militaries, including a significant portion to Israel, with far less demand for 'details' on the human cost. It appears the 'fiscal responsibility' lens only focuses when job cuts are domestic and relatively minor, not when billions are funneled into international conflicts, often perpetuating violence. One might wonder if the concern for American jobs extends to
those indirectly impacted by an economy strained by endless overseas commitments, or if certain budgets are just too sacred to question. (Perhaps the answer lies in looking at who funds political campaigns, not who funds the DOE.)
