Democrats Condemn Trump's Venezuela Strikes, Forget Their Own
Newsweek spotlighted Democrats' strong condemnation of Donald Trump’s alleged Venezuela strikes and the 'Maduro capture' rhetoric, presenting it as a stark departure from norms. This outrage, however, conveniently forgets the Obama-Biden administration's own record: a 2011 executive order declared Venezuela an 'unusual and extraordinary threat,' paving the way for sanctions that crippled its
economy. (Associated Press, 2011) The US has a documented century-long pattern of intervention, regime change operations, and economic warfare in Latin America, from Chile to Nicaragua, all under the guise of 'democracy promotion.' (PBS, 'The U.S. and Latin America: A History of Intervention') So, Democrats are shocked by unilateral interventionism... when it's politically expedient to be shocked.
One might wonder how many times the US needs to 'encourage democracy' abroad before it reflects on its own commitment to the principle at home. The cycle of bipartisan outrage, selectively applied, ensures the interventionist machine keeps turning, regardless of who occupies the Oval Office.
