This is the same U.S. policy that sanctioned Venezuela's oil industry since 2017, crippled its economy, and contributed directly to the surge of migrants seeking refuge. (Reminder: in 2019, the Trump
administration, with Bera's party's bipartisan consent, recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as Venezuela's legitimate president, despite him holding no executive power.) So, after years of destabilizing a nation then hand-wringing over the resultant migration crisis, a lawmaker admits the 'humanitarian' intervention was always about border enforcement. One might wonder if the U.S. foreign
policy playbook needs a new chapter: 'Create Crisis Abroad, Lament Consequences Domestically.' At least the candor is refreshing, if utterly damning.
