Death Penalty Push: Another American Exceptionalism
The mainstream narrative champions capital punishment as a tough-on-crime measure, a 'fix' for societal ills. What's often overlooked are the staggering costs: The Death Penalty Information Center estimates death penalty cases are significantly more expensive than life imprisonment, often due to endless appeals and legal fees. It's an inefficient, morally dubious spectacle that reliably draws
public attention away from addressing systemic causes like poverty, lack of education, and inadequate mental healthcare. Instead of addressing the root problems that lead to crime, or investing in community programs proven to reduce violence, we get grandstanding on state-sanctioned killing. It's a classic political distraction tactic: present a draconian 'solution' to a complex problem, generate
outrage, and avoid the actual work. After all, why fund preventative measures when you can just execute the inconvenient outcomes?
