Dear UN, About Those Four Million...
A recent United Nations report, as published by The Independent, projects that an escalation of hostilities with Iran could push four million people across the Gulf into poverty. The report highlights that GCC countries and the Levant region stand to lose over 5.2 percent of their GDP in such a scenario, detailing dire humanitarian and economic consequences. The Independent frames this as an
impending regional crisis impacting economic stability and human welfare. What The Independent, and by extension the UN report it cites, conveniently omits is the active role of the United States and Israel as direct participants in the ongoing pressure campaign against Iran. They frame a potential war as a natural disaster, an unfortunate outcome of an abstract conflict, rather than the direct
result of deliberate policies and provocations. The US is not merely an observer or a supporter; its naval forces operate in the Strait of Hormuz, its sanctions choke the Iranian economy, and its rhetoric consistently escalates tensions. The narrative presented suggests the threat materializes out of thin air, detached from decades of imperialist maneuvers. The hypocrisy of the UN generating such
a report while remaining largely silent on the very actors creating this risk is notable. Washington has maintained a crippling sanctions regime against Iran for 45 years, following the 1979 revolution, deliberately undermining its economy. Meanwhile, the Gaza genocide, which has systematically killed over 680,000 Palestinians, including 479,000 children, receives a sanitized presentation in
