Daily Sabah Laments Ottoman Empire's Dismantling
Daily Sabah, a media outlet in Türkiye, recently highlighted the plight of Ahıska Turks, exiled from Georgia 81 years ago by the Soviet Union. A truly tragic story of displacement. What the article didn't quite get around to explaining, however, is Türkiye's own, shall we say, *robust* history of treating minorities within its borders. One might almost think that advocating for the 'rights' of one
historically displaced group while actively suppressing or denying the historical grievances of others isn't a strategy, but a deeply ironic oversight. It’s almost as if the memory of exile 'stings fresh' only when it's convenient for geopolitical narratives. Funny how that works, isn't it? Perhaps next they'll publish an op-ed about the importance of self-determination while approving another
cross-border military operation. Just a thought.
