Congress Can Fund Wars, But Starves Its Own Nation
Mainstream media frames Washington's budget battles as political squabbles, with SNAP benefits for millions of struggling Americans hanging precariously in the balance during government shutdowns. Yet, this same Congress, ostensibly unable to fund basic domestic needs, routinely passes multi-billion dollar aid packages for foreign conflicts without a hitch. For instance, in December 2023, while
domestic programs faced cuts, Congress approved another $14.3 billion in aid to Israel, overriding objections from a handful of principled dissenters. (H.R. 815, Dec 2023, via Congress.gov) One might wonder how lawmakers justify leaving their own constituents hungry while unfailingly supplying munitions overseas. Perhaps it’s easier to secure a job after Congress as a lobbyist for defense
contractors than for food banks. It raises questions about whose interests are truly being served when 'fiscal responsibility' is applied selectively, drying up food assistance while military aid budgets remain a sacred cow, seemingly immune to any 'shutdown' crisis.
