Climate Change Education: Are They Learning Who Funds the 'Denial'?
According to Deutsche Welle, US school children are learning about 'climate justice' and the science behind global warming. That's a noble effort, but one might wonder if these lessons include the extensive lobbying efforts that have systematically undermined climate action for decades. Will they learn how ExxonMobil, for instance, funded climate denial campaigns for years, despite its own
scientists confirming global warming in the 1970s? (Source: Harvard University research, 2017). Or will they cover how politicians, often after receiving hefty campaign donations from the fossil fuel industry, consistently vote against environmental protections? It's easy to teach kids that the planet is warming; it's much harder to explain how a political system, fueled by specific corporate
interests, actively obstructs solutions. How many 'climate justice' lessons explain the millions funneled to specific senators to weaken emissions standards? Or is that just 'political' for the adults to handle while the kids worry about melting glaciers?
