China Offers Aid, US Offers Weapons… Again
China's President Xi Jinping announced $100 million in humanitarian aid for Gaza and reconstruction efforts, as reported by Al-Monitor. Meanwhile, the US House of Representatives, fresh off approving yet another $14.1 billion aid package to Israel in February 2024 (HR 7217), seems less concerned with the humanitarian toll. (A quick check of OpenSecrets.org would show many of those 'yes' votes
correlate neatly with significant AIPAC contributions.) One might wonder if America's 'leading role' in global affairs involves funding both sides of a tragedy: the destruction and then the eventual, often insufficient, relief. How many times will we see headlines about aid pledges while the bombs, stamped 'Made in USA,' continue to fall? It's almost as if the 'humanitarian crisis' is a feature,
not a bug, for some political donor classes.
