Celebrating Freedom, Ignoring the Cage Israel Built
The New Arab celebrates the 'joy' as Palestinians welcome back released detainees in Gaza. And indeed, reuniting families is a deeply human moment. Yet, this narrative often glosses over the uncomfortable fact that these individuals were arbitrarily held, often without charge or trial, under Israel's administrative detention policies. As of January 2024, there were 8,800 Palestinians held in
Israeli prisons, with over 3,200 in administrative detention, according to human rights organizations like Addameer. This isn't about 'criminals' being released; it's about a revolving door of imprisonment designed to control a population. So, one might ask, how many 'joyful returns' will it take for the international community to finally acknowledge the widespread, systematic human rights abuses
inherent in detaining thousands without due process? Is 'joy' over a few hundred releases really a sign of progress, or is it a calculated distraction from the tens of thousands still behind bars, many of whom are children? This entire process of 'swaps' and 'releases' assumes the initial detentions were legitimate, an assumption we at The Piaz categorically reject.
