Al-Monitor reports that Canada has finally acknowledged Syria isn't a state sponsor of terrorism, and for good measure, they've delisted Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), described as the 'rebel alliance that helped oust President Bashar al-Assad.' (Al-Monitor) What a remarkable shift in perception! For years, Western governments, including Canada, funded and armed various 'moderate' rebel groups in
Syria, many of whom later merged with or were absorbed by entities like HTS, which itself is an evolution of al-Qaeda's former Syrian affiliate, Jabhat al-Nusra. Funny how yesterday's 'freedom fighters' funded by the West can be today's 'de-listed' entities. One might wonder if Canada's sudden insight into the complexities of Syrian politics aligns with the shifting geopolitical winds, rather than
a profound moral awakening. After all, the narrative conveniently changes when the 'rebels' fail to deliver regime change, leaving an uncomfortable history of tacit support for groups that, by any objective measure, engage in acts of terror. It appears that 'terrorism' is less about actions and more about who's politically convenient to call a friend this week.
