This is framed as an unexpected development, rather than the entirely predictable outcome of decades-long bipartisan vilification of immigrants. For years, politicians, with robust media amplification, have championed draconian
immigration policies, portraying migrants as drains on resources or criminals, rather than essential labor. Now, the very industries that benefited from this cheap labor force and supported policies restricting their access are suddenly surprised their cheap labor supply dried up. It’s a classic case of capital requiring a reserve army of labor, but only when it's politically convenient and
exploitable. One might wonder why the 'job creators' weren't sounding these alarms when families were being separated at the border or ICE raids devastated communities. It seems the well-being of the economy only trumps xenophobia when profits are directly impacted, not when human rights are being violated.
