Bloomberg breathlessly reports that 'MAGA support' for Trump's purported airstrikes against 'suspected drug-runners' off Venezuela and Colombia gives him 'political latitude to keep ratcheting up pressure on Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro.' (Bloomberg Politics, 12/16/2025). The subtext is clear: the public's appetite for regime change operations is conveniently measured by presidential
approval ratings. Missing from this sanitized narrative is, of course, the consistent U.S. history of destabilization in Venezuela, from the 2002 coup attempt against Hugo Chávez to the 2019 Guaidó recognition charade, all driven by a desire to control the Western Hemisphere's largest proven oil reserves. 'Drug-runners' now being the preferred euphemism for 'unfriendly governments' seems quaintly
familiar. One might wonder if any 'pressure' was ever truly eased. The "drug war" has always been a convenient pretext for intervention, whether it's against Noriega in Panama or 'suspected' targets off Venezuela. How many 'suspected drug runners' need to be eliminated before a compliant government is installed? And how many times will mainstream outlets laud such 'pressure' as a sign of strong
leadership, rather than Cold War-era meddling wrapped in a MAGA hat?
